“Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits-” (Psalm 103:2).  Wait a second.  Did God’s word just say there are benefits to knowing Him?  “Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits-”  Yes, yes God’s word did just say there are benefits to knowing Him!  What kind of benefits?  “who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s” (Psalm 103:3-5).

Did you read all of that?  Amazing.  King David (author of  Psalm) stated by inspiration of the Holy Spirit that there are 5 benefits to knowing God:

1. God forgives all our sins

2. God heals all our diseases

3. God redeems our life from the pit

4. God crowns us with love and compassion

5. God satisfies us with good things

I’d like to focus on the second benefit: “heals all our diseases.”  Please notice, it doesn’t just say the Lord heals only one or two of our diseases, but all our diseases.  Also, probably most importantly, it says the Lord heals.  This is not talking about a spiritual (salvation) healing because that comes with forgiveness of sins stated in verse 2.  Verse 3 is actually talking about a physical healing.  The Hebrew word used here for heals is Rapha which means: cure, cause to heal, physician, repair, thoroughly, make whole (Bible Hub).  And the word diseases actually means to be diseased, sick, or have infirmity, and comes from the Hebrew primitive root Chala (Bible Hub).

Is it possible that God will heal us physically?  Does He really want to heal, not just one, but all of our diseases?

King David thinks so (Psalm 103:3).  Does that mean we ignore doctors and medicine?  Do we just pray and believe?  No. That would be foolish.  We should be a yes to both doctors and prayer because they are from God.  Perhaps though it’s the order in which we do these things that is most important.  I believe our first priority is to pray when we become sick.  By prayer I don’t just mean send up a quick cry for God to make us feel better.  I mean a real, true and sincere prayer in faith.  We can even get friends and family to pray with us.  Why should prayer be our first line of defense against disease and the enemy instead of first taking headache medicine or calling the doctor?  Because it shows our reliance on God instead of man.  Plus prayer offered in faith works according to the disciple James.

“Is any one of you sick?  He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.  And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up.  If he has sinned he will be forgiven.” (James 5:14-15)

Faith is the key. And James said if we offer a prayer in faith, the sick will become well.  We either believe it or we don’t.  I encourage you to believe it.  I’ve believed it many times and been healed of headaches, stomach aches, sore throats and even a hurt back (misaligned spine).  God is faithful and can do it because His word says, “…with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).  I’ve also witnessed friends healed of sickness, fever, asthma, sports injuries, and even cancer.

Let’s praise the Lord- and let’s not forget his benefits.  Sometimes all we need to do is ask in faith.  He promises to do the rest.

“Ask and it will be given to you…For everyone who asks receives…” Matthew 7:7

“But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays…” (observe the sun rays on my artwork Healing) Malachi 4:2 (NIVUK)

“For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless.” (Psalm 84:11)
