Foundation is key in our relationship with God.  No foundation equals no relationship.  A weak foundation equals a weak relationship.  Whatever we build our life on will have an impact on how we live.  Building a house on a weak foundation will result in a destroyed house that can not survive a storm.  However, when our foundation is built on Jesus, the Rock, then the house will stand and nothing can move us or destroy us.

In the passage from Matthew 7, Jesus says, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.  The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against the house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”

I want to be wise and I want to build my life (house) on the rock of Jesus.  Rain and wind will come no matter what, but when my life is built on knowing Jesus, then I have nothing to fear.

The version of this story in Luke 6:46-49, says “I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice.  He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock.”  My artwork, Dig Deep, shows the side view of a deep hole with a strong foundation of rock underneath.

We must Dig Deep until we hit rock bottom, but not because we have hit an empty, shallow place in our lives.  It’s the opposite; we have hit a strong foundation and that foundation is Jesus.  Jesus is the rock we must build upon!  The part of this passage that stands out to me is the part about digging down deep.  How do we do that?  What does that mean?  I believe how deep we dig is a reflection of how deep we love Jesus and are willing to seek Him.  In order to have a good foundation for a house, a person needs to dig deep into the ground until they find that rock.  Are we willing to put in the effort to find the Rock?

“Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.  You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.  I will be found by you,” declares the Lord (Jeremiah 29:12-14).

How do we build our lives on Jesus after we have dug down deep.  The answer is in the passage.  It says if we come to Jesus, hear His words, and then put them into practice, we will be like a man building a house on a rock.  Our way to a firm foundation is through obedience!  Obedience reveals a heart of love and devotion to God.  I want to hear Jesus’ words and obey, because I love Him!  It’s not always easy to put God’s word into practice but when we do out of a loving obedient heart, we will build our house on the Rock, which can not and will not be moved!
